As you’ll probably be aware by now, it’s Mother’s Day today! If you weren’t aware… you are welcome for the reminder!
With this day in mind, our brains started wandering a little (sorry, mum!) and we got to thinking about ‘the mother of all signs’ – the sign that encompasses the greatest example of what a sign should be.
Naturally, you can’t think along those lines without immediately conjuring up an image in your head of the legendary ‘Welcome to the Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign. There’s the ‘Hollywood’ sign, of course, but there is something about the Las Vegas sign that is just such a perfect depiction of not just a place but a lifestyle, that we felt we couldn’t not let it be the star of the show in this blog.
When it comes to signage, there’s an awful lot to think about. Alongside the obvious requirement of getting the correct information in, the way that you design any sign is so important. With a product that is so dependant on the visual aesthetics, the design really needs to be spot on so that you’re giving off the best impression of the client. The simplest thing in the design stages can end up completely transforming the vision of the company – whether it is positive or negative! For instance, you wouldn’t give a secondary school sign a similar design to the shop front for a bar – your signage needs to be a visual representation of what the business/school is all about. If you take a look through any of our case studies, you’ll be able to see that each different client has a very different ‘look’.
This is exactly why the Las Vegas sign is such a success – so much so, in fact, that the sign itself isn’t just a sign but is a landmark and an icon in its own right. It is instantly recognisable; even from a distance you’d be able to tell what it is and what it signifies. Even though it is ultimately a geographical sign, it ends up creating ‘brand’ awareness for Las Vegas. Las Vegas may be a place, but it has an ethos and a culture that is sellable in itself. People go to Las Vegas to become a part of and experience that lifestyle – to buy into the ‘brand’, so to speak. When you think of Las Vegas, you see colour, you see bright lights, you see fun, you see fabulous – and that’s exactly what the sign illustrates.
It is seeing the success of a sign such as this one that really makes you realise quite how important signage is – and we’re not just saying that because we’re biased! We want to create a sign for you that can stand the test of time and really make the most of your company.
